Laney was stumped. She opened her mouth but couldn't find the words. In her mind, she was convinced Teresa was doing all this just for Andrew's sake, as a roundabout way to curry favor. But since her father actively disliked her, there was absolutely no reason for Teresa to go to such lengths.
Seeing the girl's guarded posture, Teresa let out a helpless sigh. "Does treating you kindly mean I am sucking up to you? Laney, I told you downstairs, you are half my daughter now. And I am incredibly protective of my own. I refuse to let my daughter suffer any grievances, not even from her own father."
Teresa reached out, instinctively wanting to caress the girl's face, but thought better of it and lowered her hand. "Don't worry, I already scolded your father. If he dares to yell at you unconditionally again..." She lowered her voice conspiratorially, as if sharing a secret. "I will avenge you. I promise I won't let him off easy."
Laney stood rooted to the spot, listening to these fiercely protective words, completely silent. Her throat felt tight, a painful lump forming within it. After a long moment, she forced out a heavily congested mumble. "Don't show off your romance in front of me."
Teresa blinked in surprise, then shook her head with an amused smile. "Alright, alright, no showing off. I bet you haven't had dinner yet." She pointed to the bowl on the desk. "Eat the noodles while they are hot and get to bed early. We have to wake up early tomorrow. I won't bother you anymore."
With that, Teresa stepped out of the room, gently pulling the door shut behind her.
Laney remained perfectly still, the warm egg clutched tightly in her hand. She slowly walked over to the desk and looked down at the steaming bowl. The broth was clear, sprinkled with vibrant green scallions, topped with a beautiful golden fried egg. For some reason, her eyes completely filled with tears again. She couldn't even remember how many years had passed since her mother died, how long it had been since someone cared for her with such meticulous attention.
With a trembling hand, she pressed the warm hard-boiled egg against her swollen cheek, gently rolling it back and forth. Even though the heat stung her bruised skin with a sharp, fiery pain, the warmth seeped straight into her heart, filling her with an indescribable, greedy comfort.
