James nodded. "I can tell. He seems to genuinely be in love with Sylvia." He paused, then, as if something came to mind, glanced at Emmy and spoke slowly. "Steve said he had a very strange dream. It was as if he traveled to a parallel universe and witnessed his entire life. He originally didn't like, and could even be said to have despised, the marriage partner the family arranged for him, Sylvia. But after waking up from that dream, he said he fell in love with her." At this point, James's voice dropped lower. "Tell me... do parallel universes truly exist in this world?"
Emmy fell silent, instinctively turning her head to look out the window, avoiding James's gaze. It took a long moment before she answered calmly, "I don't know."
James said no more. The atmosphere in the car turned somewhat delicate.
After a long while, Emmy picked up her phone again, breaking the silence. "Never mind, I'll do it for the sake of the intelligence network. I haven't contacted Sylvia in a long time anyway, so I'll give her a call and ask. I can't guarantee it will work, but I'll try my best to pass the message for you."
Emmy dialed Sylvia's number. It rang for a long time before the call connected. The background noise on the other end was exceptionally quiet.
"Ms. Lincoln?" Sylvia's voice came through, a bit hoarse but revealing her surprise. "Merry Christmas."
Emmy replied, "Merry Christmas, Ms. Moore. How have you been lately? Are you at home?"
Sylvia paused before answering. "I'm at home. But not in the Capital. I'm at the Moore family estate in Seaview."
Emmy was a bit surprised. As far as she knew, Sylvia had a terrible relationship with her family. Why had she suddenly returned to her home in Seaview? Still, it was normal to reunite with family during the holidays, so she didn't think much of it.
