Seeing her humble and easily satisfied demeanor, Emmy felt a complex array of emotions. This was simply a love-starved child desperately trying to grasp at an incredibly faint shred of familial affection. Emmy sighed softly. She hadn't expected that beneath Nina's cheerful and lively exterior, and despite bearing the title of a White family lady, she harbored such a tragic background.
"Rest assured. Since you're with me, you are my person. Unless you want to leave me of your own accord, I will never send you back to the White family," Emmy said.
Nina snapped her head up, her eyes suddenly shining with staggering brightness. "Really? You mean what you say?"
"Of course," Emmy nodded.
Nina instantly broke into a smile through her tears, the gloom on her face swept away. She bounced on her feet excitedly like a joyful little rabbit. "That's wonderful! Thank you, Miss Emmy! Don't worry, I will study as hard as I can! I'll work to become a qualified bodyguard, learn all those etiquette rules, and never let that bad woman laugh at you again!"
Watching her regain her vitality, Emmy couldn't help but curve her lips into a faint smile.
...
By dusk, James arrived at the hospital with a cold-faced, short-haired woman. The woman called Nina away, while James entered the ward to keep Emmy company. Changing into a dark gray casual outfit, he pulled a chair to the bedside, sat down, and casually picked up an apple from the table to peel. His peeling technique was steady, the skin forming a continuous, unbroken ribbon. As he peeled, he chatted with Emmy. He watched her finish the apple and take her medication.
It wasn't until late into the night that Emmy fell into a deep slumber. Sitting by the bed, James gazed at her tranquil sleeping face. A faint, lingering trace of sorrow still clung between her brows. Leaning over, he pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, smoothing away the crease. He then tucked her in carefully before walking out with light steps.
Heading to the doctor's office, he knocked on the door of Lorelei's temporary workspace.
"Come in," Lorelei's voice sounded.
James pushed the door open and entered. Lorelei was sitting in front of a computer reviewing medical records. Seeing him, she didn't seem surprised. "You're here. Have a seat anywhere."
