Seeing how easygoing Emmy was, the little girl leaned in closer, her baby-fat cheeks almost pressing against Emmy's arm. "Then you have to keep it a secret for me, Emmy. You absolutely cannot let Grandpa know. If Grandpa finds out I am being so casual with my employer, he will definitely punish me again."
Emmy looked at the quirky, vibrant little girl before her. She could not hold back the faint, shallow smile that tugged at the corners of her lips. It was the first time she had smiled since arriving at the White family estate. Though faint, it was like the sun breaking through after a heavy snowfall. Emmy reached out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind Nina's ear. "Alright, I will not tell."
It did not take long for James to finish the paperwork. He walked over to Emmy and draped his heavy coat over her shoulders. "It is all sorted. Let us go."
Nina moved quickly, running out with a small military rucksack on her back in the blink of an eye. The three of them walked down the snow-covered mountain path. Leaving the oppressive ancient estate behind, Nina was like a bird freed from its cage. Her head never stopped swiveling the entire way down. One moment she was staring at the pine trees on the left cliff, and the next she was inspecting the icicles in the rock crevices on the right. Her big, bright eyes were filled to the brim with curiosity and longing for the outside world.
Emmy leaned against the back seat of the SUV, resting her head as she watched the snowy scenery blur past the window. She could not help but think of Penny. Penny had always been so quiet, like a silent reef standing firm in the deep sea. She was steady, reticent, and cold. If no one called for her, Penny could stand in a corner all day without even making a sound when she breathed. But this little girl sitting in front of her was entirely different.
"Where are we going now, Emmy? I saw on television that there is a place called McDonald's outside. Are their chicken nuggets really that delicious? When do we get to eat after we leave the mountain? Will there be meat?" Nina leaned over the back of the front passenger seat, chattering away like an endless, energetic little sparrow. Her crisp voice filled the entire cabin.
