Hanging off the snow-covered stone railing of the viewing platform was a person. It was a teenage girl, no older than fifteen or sixteen. She wore a thin, white training uniform, her hair tied in two messy pigtails that whipped wildly in the freezing wind. Her face was flushed bright red from the cold, but her large, expressive dark eyes sparked with a mischievous brilliance.
The platform hung off the middle of the mountain. Below the railing was a dizzying, jagged drop of nearly a hundred feet into a ravine of sharp rocks. One slip meant instant, gruesome death. Yet the girl hung there like a gecko, gripping the icy stone with only one hand, her body casually dangling over the abyss, swaying back and forth in the wind.
Emmy's heart seized violently, terror turning her complexion a sickly white. Driven by absolute maternal instinct, she disregarded everything and lunged toward the edge. She desperately reached out, trying to grab the girl's freezing, red hand, her voice trembling in sheer panic. "You... hurry up and climb over! It is far too dangerous, grab my hand!"
Seeing Emmy's terrified reaction, the girl simply grinned, entirely unbothered. Rather than climbing to safety, she released her grip slightly and casually shimmied further down the railing, easily dodging Emmy's grasp. She moved with the weightless grace of a monkey leaping through the canopy. Pressing a finger to her lips, she shot a guilty glance down toward the arena. "Shh! Lady, keep your voice down, or my grandfather will hear you! I sneaked out," the teenager confessed with a cheeky grin. "I heard the older girls were putting on a show for guests, so I wanted to come watch the fun."
As she spoke, her bright eyes darted down to James in the arena below, practically glowing with admiration. "I had no idea your husband was such a total badass! That last move he pulled was absolutely sick!"
She quickly shifted her attention back to Emmy, her small face lighting up with aggressive eagerness as she practically pitched herself like a salesperson. "Lady, why don't you just choose me? I am way better than those older girls down there! I know I look young, but I scored A-plus on every single combat exam. Whether it is hand-to-hand, marksmanship, endurance, or tactical planning... I am an absolute beast!"
Watching the teenager's body swing precariously in the violent mountain winds, Emmy's heart hammered against her ribs in sheer terror. She couldn't process a single word the girl was saying. "Just climb up first, we can talk when you are safe, please..."
Before Emmy could finish, the teenager's playful grin instantly evaporated. Down below, Alastair seemed to sense a disturbance and violently snapped his head up toward the platform. The girl shrank back, sticking her tongue out in panic. "Crap! Grandpa spotted me! Lady, I gotta bolt, catch you later!"
With that, under Emmy's absolutely horrified gaze, the girl simply let go of the stone railing.
