Mercedes pressed her lips together, trying not to let the tears spill, but her eyes still turned red. She walked to the lounge and dropped onto the sofa, pulling out her phone. Her thumb hovered over Nico’s pinned chat before she started typing, the words pouring out almost faster than she could think.

[Nico, why are you treating me like this? You used to be so kind. Even if you want to keep your distance, you don’t have to be so cold. Did Emmy tell you something about me? Why do you believe her and not me?]

Tears blurred the screen while she typed, every word spilling out the frustration building up inside her. She sucked in a shaky breath and hit send.

The message barely left before a red exclamation mark popped up.

[Message not delivered. The recipient has blocked you.]

Mercedes froze, staring at the screen in disbelief. He blocked me? No way. Nico could be distant sometimes, but because of Jamie, he’d never just cut her off.

Panic prickled at her skin as she hurriedly called Keaton.

He picked up right away. “Hello, Mercedes.”

“Keaton, I can’t get ahold of Nico!” she blurted. “It has to be Emmy, she must’ve gotten Nico’s phone and deleted me. I need to talk to him. Give him the phone!”

A couple seconds of silence followed. Then Keaton’s voice came through, calm and neutral, but with the faintest bit of regret. “Mercedes, you’ve got it wrong. The Chairman has his phone with him. No one’s touched it but him.”

She shook her head in disbelief. “No… that’s impossible…”

“Mercedes, the Chairman asked me to pass along a message. From now on, if there’s anything work-related, just talk to me. Don’t contact him privately anymore.”

Her face went white, lips trembling. “No. I want to see Nico. I need to hear it from him…”

Keaton didn’t entertain her pleas, his tone even colder as he continued, “The Chairman also said that because of James, he’ll keep helping your career. You’ll get resources, support, all of that. But…” The chill in his voice deepened, “This is your last chance. Push his boundaries again, do anything over the line or harass his wife, and he’ll cut you off. For good. You’re smart, Mercedes. You know exactly what he’s capable of.”

The line went dead.

Mercedes stared at her phone, her hand suddenly limp. It felt like reality had finally landed on her chest, heavy and undeniable.

Nico had really changed.
