The captain and the crew were standing together in the middle of the chaos, sweat dripping down their faces as they looked to each other for help, clearly out of their depth.
Mercedes jabbed a finger in the direction of the security guards blocking her path and the captain’s. Her voice cut through everything, icy and sharp.
“Get out of the way! Do you not understand plain English?”
She glared at them, growing more impatient by the second. “We’ve already missed the best time to set sail. If you screw up the chairman’s big event, who’s going to take the blame?”
The security team refused to budge, forming a wall at the entrance. “Mercedes, without Ms. Lincoln’s order, no one is allowed near the cockpit. No one goes in, and no one starts the ship.”
Mercedes scoffed and took a threatening step forward, not backing down at all. She pointed at the captain next.
“Are you working for the chairman or for Ms. Lincoln? Ms. Lincoln’s too busy partying to think straight. Have all of you lost it too?”
“This is the GlowOcean’s maiden voyage. The whole world is watching right now!”
“Start the engines. Now. I mean it.”
The captain was sweating even more, totally unsure who he was supposed to follow. Mercedes was a global celebrity and the resort’s international spokesperson, someone he couldn’t risk crossing.
Just as he hesitated, unsure whether he should try calling his superiors one more time, a voice rang out. It was icy, clearly furious, and instantly silenced everyone in the room.
“Do not start the engines.”
Everyone turned all at once.
Emmy strode over, still slightly out of breath. Her perfect features looked even colder with the storm brewing behind her expression, and the energy she gave off made it hard for anyone to meet her eyes.
Mercedes spotted her and let out a mocking laugh. “Ms. Lincoln, you’ve finally decided to show up?”
“I figured you were too busy drinking with all those men to care about what actually matters…”
There was a shocking, resounding slap.
Emmy’s hand came out of nowhere, landing across Mercedes’s face with a sound so loud it made the whole bow go silent.
Mercedes’s head snapped to the side. For a moment, she didn’t look like she knew what planet she was on. She stared blankly, clutching her burning cheek, completely stunned.
Even her assistant and bodyguards were frozen, unable to process what just happened.
Emmy pulled her hand back, her palm tingling from the impact. She glared at Mercedes, barely containing the anger simmering inside her. Just thinking about what could have happened if she hadn’t shown up in time made her heart race. If Mercedes had pushed the captain into that cockpit…
She didn’t even want to imagine it.
