Emmy flinched, her heart skipping a beat as she spun around and found herself face-to-face with James. His dark eyes were impossible to read, as deep as the night and just as mysterious.
“Are you finished here?” His voice was low, raspy, and gave away nothing. But his hand around her wrist gripped harder than she could stand, her skin beginning to ache beneath his fingers.
Without thinking, Emmy frowned and looked over at John standing next to her. She hadn’t even answered yet. She was here with the team and needed to stick to their schedule, not make decisions on her own.
But James only seemed to take that glance the wrong way. The look in his eyes hardened, and just like that, the air around them shifted. It felt like he’d just watched her consult another man, right in front of him.
His anger was written all over his face, and his voice was tighter now, each word pressed out between his teeth. “I asked you a question. Why are you looking at him? Is he in charge of your freedom?”
John immediately stepped in, his brow furrowed. “Mr. Nelson, the meeting here is over, but I need to take Emmy around to say goodbye to the rest of the team,” he said. “Several of our colleagues are leaving soon. It’s just good manners.”
James shot John a cold look, then pulled Emmy closer, his arm sliding possessively around her waist. “That works out, because my wife is leaving too. I’ll take her to say goodbye.” He didn’t wait for a response. Already, he was guiding her away, steering her forward with a quiet authority.
“James, what are you doing?” Emmy tried to jerk her arm free, but his hold was unyielding, leaving her frustrated. Her voice came out sharper, the hint of anger obvious. “I never said I was leaving.”
“And are you even done with work? There’s still the reception later. Aren’t you going?” She shot a look at him, reminding him the evening’s reception was the main event for everyone here. Every powerful businessperson in the world was attending, hungry for deals.
James stopped and met her gaze, his expression impossibly stubborn. “I’ve already closed deals with everyone I care about.” He paused, eyes unwavering. “That reception means nothing to me. I can walk out with you right now.”
The audacity of it made Emmy almost want to laugh. She pressed her lips together, trying to keep calm. “The new resort is about to open, James. Most of those prime spaces are still empty, aren’t they?” She tried to reason with him, her tone more patient. “Tonight’s reception is the perfect chance to find investors and partners. You’re the owner. How can you just leave?”
A muscle in James’s jaw jumped. He didn’t seem to care. “There’s always more money to make and more business to do,” he said. “But you and I—that’s the only thing that really matters right now.”
