Emmy stayed perfectly calm. “Only fools believe rumors,” she said lightly. “I’m not about to fall for wild gossip. But Mr. Abis, you do seem unusually interested in my family drama.”
Abis gave a short, mocking laugh. “Really? Because the way you acted at lunch wasn’t exactly convincing.”
Emmy didn’t bother to deny it. She held his gaze, her voice clear. “I am the wife in the middle of this whole mess. I have to react somehow, give people what they want to see. If I don’t, these kinds of scandals only get crazier, and pretty soon everyone thinks I’m just an easy target.”
A mischievous smile appeared on her lips. “But honestly, I should thank you, Mr. Abis. Your bouquet at lunch actually gave me the perfect excuse to let off some steam.”
Abis’s fingers clenched tighter around his glass. All that effort sending her flowers, and to her, he was just there to be used? He gave her help and got no gratitude. He sent flowers and she turned it into a ploy. All she seemed to care about was that guy, James.
Jealousy and frustration burned in his chest. A cold, humorless smile spread across his face, and his words came out glacial. “So that's how it is. Saving you means nothing, and you still found a way to use me. Emmy, you really know how to make someone lose heart.”
He tipped his head back and finished off his champagne in one go, movements stiff and a little reckless. When the glass was empty, he set it down on the marble table with a loud thud. He yanked his hand away and shoved it deep into his pants pocket, turning away so he wouldn’t have to look at her, fighting to keep some emotion in check.
Watching him, Emmy narrowed her eyes. She’d seen all these gestures before. Every single one. When someone else got angry but tried to hide it, he’d drain his drink, slam the glass down, and shove his hand in his pocket. It was the same unconscious habit, used to cover up genuine anger.
A chill slid down Emmy’s back. Why did Abis share Dean’s exact same movements?
Just as she was turning this over in her mind, about to say something, a woman’s voice cut in. “Emmy, congratulations.”
Emmy blinked out of her thoughts and looked up.
