The door swung open, but it wasn’t James—it was his assistant, Keaton.
He still had half a sandwich in his hand, and for a second he just stared at Emmy, totally caught off guard.
“Mrs. Nelson?”
Emmy glanced over his shoulder, scanning the suite. “He’s not here?”
Keaton scrambled to hide his sandwich. “He is... I mean, no, Mr. Nelson hasn’t come back to the room yet.”
Her voice stayed flat. “Can I come in?”
Keaton finally snapped back to his senses and stepped aside. “Of course, please come in, Mrs. Nelson.”
Emmy walked in without another word. Keaton shut the door behind her, trying to smooth things over. “Mr. Nelson should be back any minute.”
Emmy walked right to the center of the living room, paused, and looked around. Her voice was chilly. “Where did he eat breakfast this morning?”
Keaton’s heart skipped. Still, he answered honestly. “Here.”
She nodded, her face unreadable. “With who?”
Keaton’s words got stuck in his throat.
If he told her Mr. Nelson had breakfast here with Mercedes, he might as well start packing his bags.
Emmy caught his silence and gave a tight, cold smile.
“Is it really that hard to answer?”
“Or is the name just that hard for you to say?”
Keaton felt her cold stare right down to his bones. He’d worked for Mr. Nelson for years and thought he’d seen every kind of pressure, but right now, Mrs. Nelson had an edge that reminded him way too much of her husband.
He dropped his gaze and forced himself to answer. “It was Miss Chevalier.”
Emmy let out a quick, humorless laugh. “They seem pretty close.”
Close enough, she thought, that he’d fly halfway around the world just to have breakfast with her.
Keaton heard the sharpness in her voice and broke out in a cold sweat. He hurried to explain.
“Mrs. Nelson, please don’t get the wrong idea. Mr. Nelson didn’t invite her. Miss Chevalier just showed up with breakfast.”
“She insisted on eating with him. Said if he didn’t, she’d follow him down to the restaurant. Mr. Nelson really didn’t have much of a choice.”
He hesitated, then added, “Actually, Mr. Nelson came to New York this time to surprise you.”
“But you’ve been so busy, he didn’t want to interrupt your work. He was going to wait until after the summit to see you.”
