Will raised his rifle and bolted forward, firing wildly at the ridge. The whole Dragonscale team was right behind him, unloading every round they had, pinning the assassins down so hard not one of them dared lift their head.
For a second, the grenade blasts fell quiet.
They almost thought they had a shot.
Then Black Mamba popped her head up from behind a rock. She lifted her launcher, but she didn’t aim at any of them. Instead, she pointed it at a massive, crumbling boulder perched at the peak.
“Die,” she hissed.
The explosion shattered the base of the rock. The boulder, weighing several tons, broke loose and started thundering down the slope. Smaller rocks followed, crashing down in a roaring avalanche. Will and James were right in its path, barely steps from the top.
“Move!” James shouted, panic sharp in his voice.
He tried to grab Will, to pull him aside, but Will spun around and shoved him, hard, using every bit of strength he had. The force sent James rolling off to the side, into a patch of weeds at the edge of the ridge.
“Go! Get up there!” Will yelled.
James tumbled to safety, but Will’s push made him stumble just long enough for a massive rock to slam into his back. He went flying, tumbling down the slope like a ragdoll, crashing into the roots of an old tree. He landed hard, and didn’t move.
“Will!” James screamed, his voice raw with fear.
