The lobby felt strangely empty.
Emmy stepped out from behind a marble pillar, eyes glued to the elevator display as the numbers climbed and then stopped at the top floor. She let out a sigh and shrugged, almost laughing at herself.
“Guess Mom’s not coming down tonight.”
She was an adult, and she knew exactly what was happening upstairs. When people were on a high, when happiness surged, sometimes hormones just took over. Especially when it was with someone you loved. That wild urge to connect, to express everything you felt with your whole body, was just human nature.
Emmy turned and headed out of the hotel, feeling a restless heat buzz under her skin. It was contagious, apparently.
Suddenly, she missed James with a sharp ache. She missed his cool, clean scent, the way his arms burned around her, the possessive way he kissed her, how he made her feel like she was the only thing that mattered. And…
“James…”
She whispered his name to herself, making a silent promise.
If he came back to her safe and sound, she was not letting him go. She’d make up for every second they’d been apart, and then some. Three days, three nights, as long as it took to get all that time back.
Her cheeks were flushed, so she gave them a quick pat and stepped out to the curb, flagging down a taxi.
“Harvard, please.”
…
The lab’s break room was already crowded when Emmy walked in, the air thick with the smell of champagne and greasy pizza.
“Lin! You made it!”
“Hurry up, everyone’s been dying to see our superstar!”
The other PhDs crowded around her, faces lit up with excitement. Emmy’s support had made all the difference. Without her, their data model never would’ve worked, and when they’d finally submitted it for the competition, some of the guys had almost cried.
John pushed his way through, holding out two glasses of champagne.
“Lin! This one’s for you. Without you—and that million dollars—our project would have been toast!”
Emmy took the glass, shaking her head with a smile.
“I hardly did anything. You guys are the ones who pulled all-nighters and made this happen.”
“If we win an award, the credit belongs to all of you.”
Harlene slung an arm around Emmy’s shoulders, grinning with mock jealousy.
“Lin, you’re unreal. Gorgeous, brilliant, rich, and you’re actually nice? Seriously, what kind of man saves the galaxy to end up with you?”
A few of the guys chimed in, laughing.
“Yeah, Lin, what’s your husband’s secret?”
James’s face flickered in Emmy’s mind. She couldn’t help the little smile that slipped out, but she kept quiet.
