Emmy blinked, completely at a loss.
“The matriarch… what did she want me to do?”
Cadence’s smile faded, a hint of worry settling between her brows.
“After she passed, she left you a letter. She asked you to read it, then burn it. To make sure you’d follow through, she left you the entire Star Jewel.”
Emmy searched her memory and came up empty. She didn’t even want to try to remember.
“I’m sorry, Cadence.” She shook her head, honest and open. “I really don’t remember what was in that letter.”
Cadence’s gaze lingered on her, sharp and searching, as if she could somehow spot a lie. After a long silence, her voice came out low and heavy.
“She wanted you to stop James from taking revenge.”
Those words hit Emmy like a punch to the chest. Even with her memory gone, she’d spent enough time with James to sense the darkness he kept locked away. She could feel the hate and obsession burning beneath the surface. It was the thing that kept him moving forward.
Almost without thinking, Emmy spoke.
“I’m sorry. I can’t do that.”
Now it was Cadence’s turn to be surprised. She hadn’t expected Emmy to refuse so quickly, without a trace of doubt. The old Emmy had always been cautious, careful, always second-guessing. But this Emmy, stripped of her past, seemed almost fearless. For a second, Cadence didn’t know if the memory loss was a blessing or a curse.
She tried to reason with her, voice gentle and patient.
“I hope you’ll think about it again. If James goes through with his revenge, things are going to get ugly. Nelson Corporation could take a serious hit, and the family could fall apart. Your father-in-law is president now. The last thing he needs is a crisis at the company, or the family tearing itself to pieces.”
Cadence made sense. She was thinking about the big picture. But Emmy just couldn’t bring herself to care about any of that. She lifted her head, eyes steady and clear. She met Cadence’s gaze, not backing down for a second.
“I have thought about it. James is my husband. Whatever he chooses, he has his own reasons. As his wife, I’ll stand by him. No matter what. Even if it’s revenge.”
