Emmy stared at Juan, disbelief written all over her face. Was this guy actually crazy?
She didn’t even bother arguing. Her voice was icy as she said, “If you’re sick, get help. Don’t come around here acting nuts.”
Without another word, Emmy told the driver to go. The car pulled away fast, leaving Juan standing there, stuck in place, frustration simmering in his chest.
He’d only found out about Emmy’s real identity after Dean kidnapped her. Mrs. Nelson. The Nelson family. The kind of family that ruled over the city from the very top, so powerful that a single word from them could send the whole Capital into chaos.
He couldn’t wrap his head around it. How could Emmy possibly end up with a family like that? To him, she’d just married a regular firefighter.
For months, he’d tried to dig up anything he could about James and the Nelsons. No matter who he asked or how many strings he pulled, he found nothing. It made no sense.
Then the story blew up, splashed all over the news, and everyone in their world was talking about it. At parties, in group chats, all the rich kids and socialites whispered about her. Some doubted she was really Mrs. Nelson. Others were jealous, wishing they could be the one to marry up. But most just loved gossiping about how Dean had taken her.
Dean had been so obsessed with Emmy that he gave up everything, even his life back home, just to have her. He’d become a wanted man, all for her. And Emmy… she vanished.
Gone for a year.
No one knew where she went or what she’d been through. But in Juan’s mind, it all made sense. A guy like Dean, so controlling and twisted, if he couldn’t win her heart, he’d just keep her for himself. He couldn’t take on the Nelsons, so he ran off with Emmy, hiding out somewhere far away.
One man, one woman, alone for a year. Who would ever believe nothing happened?
Juan’s lips twisted in disgust as he muttered, “She acts so pure.”
He yanked open his car door, slammed it shut, and pulled out his phone. Scrolling to the chat with his circle of rich heirs, he started typing furiously.
If she didn’t want to listen, he’d make sure she saw the truth.
Juan: [Emmy’s back.]
Messages started pouring in, the whole group blowing up in seconds.
[No way. She actually came back? The nerve.]
[I figured she died out there. Wasn’t Dean hunted down by Interpol? I heard he died in Fiji. They sent his ashes home.]
