Emmy felt completely numb. After everything that happened last night, he actually said he held back? If that was him holding back, she didn’t dare imagine what it would be like if he went all out. Her scalp tingled, and her legs were shaking.
“You… you’re such a jerk!” It took all her effort to squeeze out those two words. Her face was burning hot.
She could not handle another second of this dangerous conversation with that insatiable man. Pushing him away, she hurried off toward the living room. “I’m starving! I need to eat!” She tried to walk briskly, but every step reminded her just how sore her body was, making her movements a little wobbly.
James didn’t follow right away. He watched Emmy for a few seconds. Once he saw she was moving, maybe a bit slow but otherwise fine, he finally relaxed. Then he strolled after her at his own pace.
The living room was quiet, just a few housekeepers dusting the shelves. Emmy looked around, feeling like she’d just done something wrong. No sign of her mom. She let out a silent sigh of relief and turned to Marian, who was setting the table.
“Marian, where’s my mom?”
Marian smiled, her expression gentle. “Mrs. Walton left early this morning to have tea with a friend. She won’t be back for lunch.”
Emmy’s heart, which had been in her throat, finally settled. If her mom had caught her sleeping in past noon, she would have guessed what happened last night for sure.
“That’s good,” Emmy muttered, pulling out a chair and sitting down. It was already twelve-thirty, so this definitely counted as brunch.
As soon as she finished lunch, James’s phone buzzed. He picked it up and stepped outside to take the call. A few minutes later, he strode back in. Without paying any attention to Marian or the butler, he walked straight up to Emmy, leaned down, and kissed her on the forehead.
“I’ve got something to take care of. I’ll call you when I’m done,” he said.
Marian and the butler exchanged a look, both trying not to laugh. The two of them were acting so sweet, it was like watching newlyweds.
