John pulled a face and started complaining right away.
“It really is a nightmare. We’re totally stuck on the third logic chain…”
Emmy cut him off, straight to business. “Share your screen. Let me see the core code.”
In an instant, they switched into work mode.
As lines of code scrolled by, Emmy kept her eyes fixed on the screen, chiming in whenever she needed to guide him.
“Line forty-five, fix that parameter.”
“The feedback mechanism here is off. Add an adaptive loop.”
“Yeah, right there. Bump the threshold up by point five.”
Her voice wasn’t loud, but in the quiet of the night, it sounded sharp and clear. She was so focused, so confident, she practically glowed.
James lounged back on the sofa, eyes dark as he watched her from across the room, video-chatting with another man. He listened as she rattled off one technical term after another—some he understood, some went right over his head. He watched how her back straightened when she concentrated, how her calves swayed just under the hem of her dress whenever she was deep in thought. His gaze grew heavier, and there was no denying he was getting drawn in, bit by bit.
Twenty minutes later, John suddenly let out a loud cheer from the other side of the call.
“It’s working! It’s finally running! Lin, you are a genius!”
John was flushed with excitement, practically bouncing in his chair.
“I couldn’t have done this without you! Seriously, we would’ve been stuck here for another week at least. You’re my muse!”
“Lin, honestly, I have no idea what I’d do without you…”
He went on and on, obviously thrilled, and for a second, it looked like he might try to reach through the screen just to give her a hug. Emmy blushed, a small dimple appearing at the corner of her lips.
Suddenly, she felt a shadow fall over her from behind, along with a wave of body heat.
On the call, John’s excited rambling cut off in an instant. His eyes got huge, staring right at the man behind Emmy, mouth forming a perfect O.
In the corner of the video window, a shirtless man had appeared—James. His skin was bronze, muscles rippling like they’d been sculpted from stone, all wild and intimidating. But his eyes were the most intense part—ice cold, razor sharp, fixed right on John through the screen.
John sucked in a breath, blurting out, “Oh! Jesus! Holy shit!”
