When Emmy got back to Moonlight Bay, night had settled in completely. Garden lights cast a gentle glow, making the old house look even more peaceful and timeless. She had barely set foot in the courtyard when a Rolls-Royce slipped into the garage behind her.
James stepped out of the car, looking unfairly good in a dark gray suit that fit his tall frame perfectly. He clearly just came from work. The soft light from the streetlamps caught his features, making his face look impossibly handsome and just a little bit distant. As he walked in, he undid the buttons on his jacket, shrugged it off, and draped it over his arm with casual ease. The white shirt underneath was just tight enough to show off his chest, and Emmy honestly had to remind herself to breathe.
The butler came over to take his jacket, but James hardly seemed to notice. He walked straight to Emmy, his long strides eating up the space between them. Emmy stood on the steps, watching him approach, and even though she’d seen him like this a hundred times, it still made her heart race. She felt a little dazed, caught up in the way he seemed to step right out of the night just for her.
James stopped in front of her. The cool look in his eyes melted away the moment he looked at her, replaced by something deep and impossible to read.
“How are you feeling today?” His voice was low and warm, with just enough tenderness to make her cheeks go hot.
Emmy snapped out of her trance, quickly looking away as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’m fine. Really, there’s nothing to worry about.”
She risked another glance at him. She wasn’t planning to stay long in the country, and there was so much to do. But James? He was always busy, always somewhere else.
“Wow, the big boss finally finished work?”
James’s eyes flashed with a smile. He stepped closer, closing the little space left between them. Of course he wanted to be with her all the time. He wanted to hold her close, to watch her and never miss a moment. But he also understood she needed her own space, especially after just coming back. That’s why he squeezed all his work into the daytime, so his evenings could be just for her.
James leaned down, his voice turning rough and soft all at once. “I’m free now.”
“Tonight, I’m all yours.”
Emmy froze, her face going bright red. Why did that sound so... suggestive? Especially with her mom standing right there by the living room window, smiling at them like she knew every secret.
