Vespera stood there speechless for several seconds. Originally, she had planned to ease into the conversation with Dominic. But clearly, he needed a wake-up call.
So, she pulled out her phone and shoved the picture right in front of his face. She wanted the picture to snap him out of it.
"Severed heads?" Dominic asked calmly.
He wasn't terrified at all. He pressed his finger against the screen that Vespera had nearly smacked into his nose and calmly pushed it away, looking kind of annoyed.
Vespera was dumbfounded. Why wasn't Dominic freaking out? There were literal heads in the picture! Who could see such a thing and stay this calm?
"It's them," said Dominic, recognizing who the heads belonged to.
His gaze locked onto the picture as his expression turned colder. He asked, "Did you receive this in the morning?"
"I received it around 10:00 pm," replied Vespera.
"Last night? Why didn't you give me a call?" Dominic asked with a frown.
He knew how easily Vespera spooked, especially with such things. She had probably been up the entire night.
Vespera said, "That isn't the point anyway. What matters is that Belinda seems to be after me now. She sent the picture to me, not you. That says everything. Honestly, I'm scared."
Even though it was embarrassing to admit it, she had indeed stayed up all night because of a picture.
"Come here," said Dominic, wrapping an arm around her waist.
"It's work hours," said Vespera, brushing his hand away. She added, "I just came to show you this nightmare so that you aren't blindsided later. We'll talk more tonight."
With that, she grabbed her phone and walked out, her heels clicking sharply on the floor. Meanwhile, Dominic fell silent.
…
The rest of the morning passed in a blur. There was no time to talk about anything personal.
By noon, the employees of the secretary department invited Vespera to lunch at a newly opened restaurant nearby.
Meanwhile, Dominic was called away by Samuel for a business lunch and took Gerard along. With her afternoon unexpectedly free, Vespera accepted the invitation and headed out with her colleagues from the secretarial department.
