Last night, four people tried to ambush Vespera in the forest. However, Evelyn dealt with them.
It was only yesterday that Vespera had found out that Evelyn used to be a special forces commander. Because her family was against it, she eventually resigned. Now, she ran her own company.
Evelyn had taken down the woman first. She dragged the latter off to the mushroom tower to hide her. As for the remaining three, she took care of them with ease. Some were in plain sight, and others quietly in the background.
The two women, who were with Drake and in matching gowns with Vespera, had claimed that the whole point of dressing similar to Vespera was to swap places with her in the forest. The goal was to make her disappear.
Unfortunately, their plan failed instantly. Vespera had been cold and had thrown on a jacket. The three had thought that they were great actors. Honestly, Vespera had to bite back the urge to recommend they enroll in a theater class.
Who would trust people they had known for only a few hours? They didn't trust anyone else, but they put all their faith in Dominic? Did they think he was slow-witted?
At the dining table, everyone didn't have any appetite to eat. Calvert was the only one wolfing down his food. He had slept in until late morning and woken up famished.
Last night, Dominic had given Calvert a few tasks, including dismantling stuff, stealing a few items, cutting the power at just the right moment, stringing the security guards in the surveillance room in a tree, and running interference so no one made it back to the castle too soon. Honestly, his arms were still sore.
"Calvert, you should eat more," said Vespera, giving Calvert a sympathetic pat on the head. She added, "If you weren't around, who else would Mr. Reid overwork to the bone? I mean, he practically had you seconds away from hijacking a rocket ship."
Upon hearing that, Calvert grumbled in a low voice. Meanwhile, Evelyn overheard their conversation and laughed so hard she was wiping tears from her eyes. She turned to Vance and said, "Vance, they're so cute. Let's have two babies just like them."
Evelyn said it the way someone might ask for a pair of toys.
Vance took a deep breath and replied, "Darling, maybe we should get you into therapy."
It was the first time Vance protested, but all he got in return was a smack on the thigh by Evelyn.
