Vespera turned off the stove and headed for the door. She might be paranoid, but the first thing that popped into her mind was Tina and Selena. Although it was irrational, that was honestly where her brain went.
She peered through the peephole. Then, she froze and didn't open the door. Pretending she hadn't seen anything, she turned back into the kitchen. She still had pasta to finish and tomato sauce to prepare.
So, that was why Nancy resigned so quickly. She had come to Londarion ahead of schedule.
But didn't Gerard say Nancy used to live here? So, why didn't she have a key?
The doorbell rang again and again, but Vespera kept ignoring it.
It was late, and most people were probably asleep. If someone else wanted to open the door, suit themselves, then. Anyway, she wouldn't open the door.
Sure enough, Gerard came down and opened the door five minutes later. He muttered, "Ms. Acosta…"
Since Nancy was no longer the general manager of the branch office or the chairman's assistant, Gerard changed his tone when addressing her, especially since she was currently unemployed.
Nancy stepped inside as if she still owned the place. She had told Fawn earlier that she was resigning and heading to Londarion first, saying that she had her own way of handling things.
At that time, Fawn hadn't wanted Nancy involved anymore. If Nancy kept interfering, it would only make things worse. However, no one could stop her. She had hopped two connecting flights and landed in Londarion yesterday afternoon.
Nancy was fully aware that Dominic would look into her whereabouts and confirm she was gone. So, she deliberately flew to Holsword first, just to cover her tracks. But she had no idea what had happened last night.
She greeted, "Mr. Nicholson, how have you been?"
Gerard nearly wilted on the spot. He thought, "How have I been? Not good at all. I'm stuck in a full-blown war and a love triangle!"
Nancy sniffed the air and said, "It smells amazing. Are you cooking? I arrived just in time then. I'm starving."
"I wasn't cooking. I was sleeping," said Gerard as he closed the door. Then, he asked, "Ms. Acosta, didn't you leave Halewick for Holsword?"
Nancy asked coldly, "What's wrong? You're allowed to be here, but I'm not?"
Just then, Vespera walked out of the kitchen holding a plate of pasta and tomato soup. She smiled politely at the two people in the living hall and walked over to the dining area.
When Gerard saw that smile, he shuddered. Why did he come downstairs? He should have pretended to be asleep.
Vespera calmly placed the food on the table. Then, she sat down and began eating slowly.
Nancy walked over and sat across from her. She said, "Don't get the wrong idea. I didn't follow you or anything. A friend in Holsword wanted to come to Londarion, and since I lost my job and had nothing better to do, I tagged along."
Vespera took another bite of pasta before looking up. She stared at Nancy for a while, then smiled again. She said, "Ms. Acosta, you're free to come and go as you please."
She then gestured upstairs with her fork and added, "Mr. Reid is probably knocked out cold right now. Do you want to be brave and sneak in for round two?"
At that, Nancy was speechless.
