The cat let out a few small meows, almost like it could read Vespera's thoughts. Tilting its head, it looked up at her with big, round eyes.
Vespera melted on the spot. She crouched down and gently stroked the cat's head. "You've gotten chubbier."
The cat leaned into her hand, rubbing its head against her palm and meowing in a cute tone.
Dominic crouched down beside Vespera and said, "It doesn't have a name yet. You should name it."
Vespera thought for a moment and responded, "It's all soft and chubby, and its belly is so white. How about Snowball?"
Dominic was at a loss for words.
Noticing his silence, Vespera turned to look at him. "Does it sound bad? Do you not like it?"
Dominic laughed. "No, it's great. Really. It's perfect."
Wrapping his arms around her from behind, he joined her in petting Snowball. "Alright, from now on, your name is Snowball."
Snowball, now saddled with a name that sounded suspiciously like something someone might say while playing in snow, meowed cheerfully, clearly pleased with its new identity.
Dominic and Vespera stayed like that in the corridor, crouched side by side and completely absorbed in their own little world. They petted Snowball and laughed softly as if no one else existed.
They had almost forgotten someone was still sitting in the living hall.
Nancy could hear Dominic's voice, and the way he spoke made her heart ache. He seemed so gentle.
She watched him willingly squat down with another woman to play with a cat. The cat had such a ridiculous name, yet he said it was perfect?
Every breath felt like a blade slicing through her chest. She got up, ready to storm out. However, halfway through her first step, Fawn's warning echoed in her mind.
Dominic was doing it on purpose. He wanted to make her jealous.
Nancy clenched her fists. If he wanted to play this game, she would play too. Composing herself, she walked steadily down the corridor.
By the time she reached them, they had just stood up, still cradling Snowball in their arms.
"The cat is adorable. But if I remember right, you used to be a clean freak. You never raised pets, did you?" Nancy smiled and asked. Then, she glanced at Snowball in Vespera's arms.
