It couldn't be…
"Mr. Reid, good morning," greeted Vespera as she looked up with a bright smile, trying to seize the upper hand as usual.
However, it wasn't Dominic sitting across from her. It was Luke.
Suddenly, the sandwich lost all appeal. Vespera dropped it back onto the plate and said, "I don't remember inviting you to sit with me. Get up and leave."
Ignoring her tone, Luke asked, "Do you know who the woman from yesterday was?"
"I'm not interested," replied Vespera
Luke gave a wicked smile and said, "She's the daughter of the Locke family."
That made Vespera pause. So, Carly was the daughter with intellectual disabilities that Gerard had mentioned. The mistress's daughter.
But what was Luke doing with Carly?
Then, the realization hit Vespera. She said, "So? Are you here to brag? Now that you're tired of Tina, you've moved on to her relative's daughter, who is someone with intellectual disabilities? Wow, Luke. You really are something. Truly impressive."
Luke's expression darkened at her words, but he recovered quickly. Instead of replying, he reached across the table and took her discarded sandwich. As he ate it, he said, "I actually find her pretty adorable, but she isn't into me. She obviously likes Dominic."
Vespera clenched her fists. She smiled and responded calmly, "So? Do you want to compete with him?"
Luke leaned forward and said, "You already know what I'm about to say. Dominic didn't spend the night with you, did he? He went to see Carly. Mr. Locke called his father and told him to have Dominic bring Carly home and take care of her."
If everyone knew how ugly love could get in the end, maybe no one would be brave enough to try it.
…
Once Vespera got into her car, she pulled out her phone and typed a message. She wanted to ask Dominic if he had gone to see Carly last night.
Her finger hovered over the send button, but she couldn't bring herself to tap it.
What was the point? Even if Dominic had gone, what difference would it make? They weren't meant to be, so why torture herself?
Vespera deleted the message. Just then, a new message popped up on the screen.
