"He had a very difficult childhood..."
Coralie parted her pale lips, staring blankly at Jude.
"Yes."
Jude nodded. "Aside from the old master, no one in the Rhodes family treated him like a human being."
"If you hadn't appeared, I'm afraid the Governor would have given up a long time ago."
Coralie sat frozen, rubbing her throbbing temples.
Explosive revelations had been dropping one after another tonight, and her heart and mind could barely take it anymore.
"You guys head back first. I'll take care of him here."
"Understood."
Jude let out a long sigh of relief, secretly thrilled but not daring to show it. "We'll be right downstairs in the car. If the Governor needs anything, just say the word."
"By the way, Ms. Quill, is your stomach feeling alright?"
The doctor had originally been summoned by the Governor to check on her.
Who knew it would end up being a lucky twist of fate that he was the one who needed treating first?
Now that Ms. Quill had heard about the Governor's tragic past, she surely couldn't be as angry as before.
"I'm fine." Coralie raised her eyes, her voice crisp. "With such a massive scene tonight, will Channing's position be compromised?"
'The esteemed Governor, playing lapdog to a scandalous casino boss for over three years.'
Even she thought it sounded absolutely absurd.
"Uh."
Jude opened his mouth, hesitating before offering soft reassurance. "There will be some fallout, but please don't worry. The Governor will handle it all."
"How is he going to handle it?"
Coralie recalled the looks people were giving him in the venue earlier.
And on top of that—
Hadn't Jude mentioned that his psychotic older brother was back in the country, actively trying to sabotage him?
Chances were, the sudden invitation tonight and the leak of her pregnancy had been orchestrated by him.
"He absolutely can." Jude smiled. "You have to trust the Governor. If he can't solve the problem, he'll simply eliminate the person creating it."
At those words, Coralie's heart suddenly tightened. The rumors surrounding Channing flashed through her mind.
Ruthless. Cold-blooded. Willing to destroy his own family.
Yet earlier, she had practically beaten and cursed at him. She really had a death wish.
"Ms. Quill, we'll leave the Governor in your capable hands."
Jude bowed respectfully and led Dr. Landon out.
