"Of course."
Jude nodded and turned to Dr. Landon. "Stay here and keep an eye on the Governor."
—
In the living room.
Coralie sat on the sofa, looking at Jude. "Please, take a seat."
"I wouldn't dare!"
Jude shook his head furiously, looking like a rattled bobblehead.
The woman sitting in front of him was the future First Lady. There was no way he'd dare sit on equal footing with her.
"If you stand, I have to keep craning my neck to look at you."
"Understood."
Jude thought about it for a second before obediently sitting down. "Whatever Ms. Quill wishes to ask, I will answer completely and honestly."
"When did Channing start having feelings for me?"
A loaded question right off the bat?
Jude opened his mouth, unsure if he should be answering this on his boss's behalf.
But if he didn't speak up, the Governor might lose his future wife and his unborn child.
As long as the Governor got his happy ending, Jude was willing to take a scolding.
"The children's home." Jude raised his eyes and answered earnestly, "To be exact, it was April 1st, 2075."
April 1st?
Coralie remembered that day with crystal clarity. It was the exact day she was admitted to the orphanage.
"The Governor had accompanied Alaric Rhodes to the orphanage for a charitable donation, and that's where he saw you." Jude laid it all out. "I heard that, back then, you gave him a piece of flatbread."
Coralie froze.
She remembered. There had been a boy sitting alone under a tree.
Assuming he was a fellow orphan, she had offered him her food.
That boy was Channing Irving?!
So he wasn't lying. He really had known her for over a decade!
"The Governor had a very difficult childhood. His mother never loved him, and his father couldn't stand the sight of him. His older brother only knew how to steal what was his."
