Her hand was freezing, her body still trembling slightly.
She clearly hadn't processed the reality of the situation yet.
"Coralie, there are some things I'll explain to you in a—"
"Shut up!"
Coralie cut him off, instinctively raising her hand, wanting nothing more than to slap him hard across the face.
But her hand hovered in the air, refusing to fall.
Unable to contain her boiling frustration, Coralie hurled a small packet of tissues directly at his chest.
Then, she violently shoved him aside and stormed out of the conference hall without looking back.
Channing remained rooted to the spot. The tissues bounced harmlessly off his shoulder, leaving him entirely unfazed.
He bent down to pick up the packet, his thumb lightly brushing over the plastic wrapper as the corners of his lips curved upward into a subtle smile.
*In the end, you still couldn't bear to hurt me, could you, Coralie?*
"Handle the fallout here," Channing ordered before quickly breaking into a jog to chase after her.
The reporters instinctively surged forward to pursue them, but Jude's voice cut through the air, chillingly calm. "The Governor is armed."
The reporters gulped collectively, silently and uniformly shuffling back to where they stood.
The executives in the audience only dared to huddle together in hushed, buzzing clusters once Channing was completely out of sight.
"Are my eyes deceiving me? Did the Governor just get physically assaulted?"
"Not assaulted, just... pelted."
"What's the difference? It's always been the Governor dealing with everyone else. When have you ever seen anyone dare to show him that kind of disrespect?"
"Depends on the person, I guess." A young woman standing nearby chimed in, looking as though she entirely understood the dynamic. "The Governor was perfectly willing to play the role of her loyal lapdog for three years. So what if she threw something at him?"
Behind closed doors, who knew how "abused" he actually got?
The Governor vs. the beautiful casino boss.
Hold on.
She suddenly felt like this whole scandal was incredibly romantic!
"The Governor is acting like an absolute lunatic!"
The venue was in total chaos, with a cacophony of voices debating Channing's supposed dereliction of duty.
"Dereliction of duty?" The young woman blinked. "Since the Governor took office, you've all witnessed the explosive growth of Caelus with your own eyes. He's shed blood, sweat, and tears for this state. How is he failing in his duties?"
"If you're talking about his stint as a 'boy toy' ruining his image..."
At this, the girl couldn't help but let out a snort of laughter. "Was his image ever that great to begin with?"
