Her tongue burned so badly.
Channing Irving.
Stupid jerk.
The more she thought about it, the harder Coralie cried.
—
In the hotel lobby.
Channing saw Juniper sitting on the sofa.
She had her legs crossed, casually playing a game on her phone.
"Ms. Payne."
Realizing Juniper was waiting for him, Channing stopped in his tracks.
"Sit!"
Juniper lazily lifted her gaze, her voice cool. "Five-minute chat."
Channing thought for a moment, then took a seat across from her and replied politely, "Go ahead, Ms. Payne."
"Do you like Coralie?"
Channing hadn't expected her to be so direct. He stiffened for a second before answering in a low voice, "I love her."
"She just kicked you out. What's your plan now?"
Juniper glanced at him and asked another question.
"If I don't leave, she'll be uncomfortable." Channing answered honestly. "I'll wait for her to call me back."
"What if she forgets about you and finds another boy toy..."
"She won't." Channing parted his thin lips into a bitter smile. "She won't forget me because... she likes me."
Having been by her side for three years, she was completely accustomed to his presence.
She couldn't live without him.
And.
She did like him, she just refused to admit it to herself.
"You're quite confident."
Hearing his answer, Juniper put down her phone, shifted her gaze to him, and gave a mocking smile.
"I know she holds someone else in her heart, but it doesn't matter."
At the mention of Coralie, Channing's eyes softened with nothing but tenderness and indulgence. "As long as she spares a tiny bit of her affection for me, that's enough."
"Not jealous? Not possessive?" Juniper narrowed her eyes, assessing him.
Her own husband, Shanley, was a total vinegar jar. If she so much as looked at a stray dog a second too long, he would ask if the dog was better looking than him.
