"Request Channing's presence for what?" Alaric sneered, his tone completely merciless. "He's never treated Channing like a son a day in his life. Don't tell me he wants to play the loving father now."
"Well..."
The steward opened his mouth, hesitating slightly. "It might have something to do with Zachary. Word is, he's returning to Caelus."
"Zachary?" Alaric's gaze instantly turned glacial, his expression dropping into something much darker. "That little bastard actually dares to show his face here?"
"I heard Conrad approved his return for a week."
The steward looked highly uncomfortable, his voice laced with concern. "Back then, the two brothers fought a brutal war over the Governor's seat."
"It's been years since they last saw each other. Who knows if the bad blood has settled even a little bit."
Conrad summoning Channing was likely laying the groundwork for Zachary's return.
A thinly veiled warning telling Channing not to step out of line.
"Hmph."
Just thinking about his son and eldest grandson made Alaric sick to his stomach. He barked sharply, "Go keep a close eye on them for me. If that useless son of mine dares to bully Channing, you come back here and tell me immediately."
A son couldn't hit his father, but a father could absolutely still beat his son, right?
Perfect.
He didn't have much else going on today. Thrashing his son would be an excellent way to stretch his stiff joints.
"Right away, sir."
The steward couldn't hide his grin. He was actually quite looking forward to witnessing that spectacle.
—
Inside his bedroom.
Channing unpacked his suitcase and glanced at his pinned conversation on his phone.
Still completely empty.
He let out a helpless chuckle, giving in as he took the initiative to call her.
One ring. Two rings. Three rings...
The wait felt like an eternity.
Finally, the call connected, and Channing spoke eagerly, "Ms. Quill..."
Loud music pulsed through the speaker, sounding distinctly like a club or a party.
Before he could process the noise, an unfamiliar man's voice drifted through: "How was our dancing, Ms. Quill?"
"We know more than just the leg-sweep dance. Would you like to see a different routine?"
