Annie dialed several more times, only to receive the exact same automated message.

The number could not be reached.

It was true.

Her mind snapped, and she glared at Ebony Fox viciously. "Otherwise, Grandpa loves me the most, how could he abandon me?"

"Wrong."

Ebony Fox stood her ground, her expression perfectly composed as she spoke slowly. "Between the family's honor and you, the Ainsworth family simply chose the former."

"To put it simply, you are now nothing but a discarded pawn for the Ainsworth family."

Annie shook her head violently, screaming in denial. "You're speaking nonsense! Grandpa and Dad wouldn't abandon me, you must have pulled some strings behind the scenes."

Following her shrill screech, Annie lunged like an out-of-control rabid dog, whipping out the "self-defense dagger" she always kept in her purse and thrusting it at Ebony Fox.
