By the time she woke up, it was already evening.
The room was bathed in the soft glow of a warm, eye-friendly lamp. As she shifted her body, she noticed something warm resting comfortably against her stomach.
A heating pad.
She vaguely remembered Kurt murmuring something to her earlier, giving her some medication for her cramps, and placing this pad on her.
She had been sleeping so deeply, and it felt so soothing, she thought she had dreamed the whole thing.
Turning her head, she spotted him sitting out on the balcony.
He was in a black t-shirt and jeans rolled up slightly, exposing his lean ankles.
He seemed to be fiddling with something in his hands.
Squinting, she realized he was peeling grapes.
After that long nap.
Ebony Fox's cramps had eased significantly, and her energy had returned.
Throwing off the covers, she padded barefoot out to the balcony.
"You're awake?"
Kurt flashed a warm smile, but it faded the moment his gaze dropped to her bare feet.
Without a word of scolding, he simply stood up and scooped her into his arms.
"What are you doing?"
Ebony Fox instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck, struggling slightly. "Put me down."
She wasn't a toddler; what was with all this carrying?
"Alright."
He obediently set her down—right onto his lap.
He took a seat on the chair, settling her sideways across his thighs.
"You—"
"I'm pushing my luck, I know," Kurt readily admitted. "But there's only one chair out here. This is the most practical solution."
That way, they both had a place to sit.
"Sit by yourself." She shot him a glare, making a move to stand.
"Don't move around so much."
Kurt held her steady. Tilting his chin up, his eyes gleamed with a strange, magnetic intensity in the pitch-black night.
Sensing the shift in the atmosphere, a flicker of self-consciousness crossed Ebony Fox's face.
Faced with this kind of situation for the first time, she honestly didn't dare to move again.
Kurt's voice dropped to a slightly husky register. "Juniper dropped off some grapes for you. I peeled them. Have a taste."
"Juniper was here?"
"She brought over some painkillers for your cramps," he answered.
"Oh."
