Don't Mess with the Girl with Candy novel Chapter 1612

"Boss, Ms. Payne is..."

Felton and Flint stepped out of the elevator, perfectly timing their arrival to spot the woman standing outside the examination room.

"Huh?"

Flint's voice cut off abruptly as he looked at Felton. "Don't you think that doctor looks a little like Ms. Payne?"

Felton looked at Juniper, then down the hall at their boss, who looked so humiliated he clearly wanted the floor to swallow him whole.

"Are you blind? That is Ms. Payne."

Felton grabbed Flint, who had just stepped out of the elevator, yanked him back inside, and frantically jammed the 'close door' button.

Thump—

Flint the back of his head against the elevator wall and winced in pain. "What the hell are you doing?"

"When the big bosses fight, the minions suffer," Felton said deadpan. "Didn't you see how pissed she looked, and how terrified the boss was? If we go over there right now, we're just offering ourselves up as punching bags."

Flint finally realized the gravity of the situation. "Good point!"

"But we kept this completely under wraps. How did she find out?"

"Is that really what we should be worrying about right now?" Felton shot him a look of utter exasperation. "If she's mad, the boss's life is going to be a living hell. And if his life is hell, we're the ones who'll be walking on eggshells."

"Sigh."

Flint let out a long breath, bowed toward the ceiling, and prayed, "Lord, please let the boss smooth things over with her quickly."

Outside the examination room.

Juniper and Shanley were still locked in a staring contest.

Ultimately, Shanley threw in the towel. He took the initiative to walk over, tentatively reaching out to take her hand.

He thought she would angrily push him away, but to his surprise, she was quite docile.

She simply let him hold her hand.

"You must be exhausted after sitting on a plane for over ten hours," he swallowed hard, his voice impossibly soft and gentle. "Let's go home so you can rest. You can settle the score with me later, okay?"

"You're not going to kill me anymore?" Juniper lifted her eyelids, glancing at him with a lazy, teasing drawl.

"I didn't know it was you." He felt incredibly foolish and apologized helplessly. "That silicone mask was just way too realistic."

Coupled with the voice changer, the surgical mask, and the glasses acting as a shield, he truly hadn't recognized her.
