"You don't like him?"
Melvin paused, his voice turning deep and rough. "Aren't you two dating? You see each other every day, the whole department is talking about it."
"No."
Janet scratched her head, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Kian has been pursuing me, but I don't like him. As for the rumors, they're completely fabricated. I'm going to set the record straight."
"Really?"
Melvin took a step forward and tilted Janet's chin up, studying her face.
"Mmh—"
Janet was forced to look up and meet Melvin's gaze, her neck straining slightly. "Really."
She might be young, but she wasn't stupid. Every time Kian saw Melvin, he practically fell over himself trying to suck up to him. And he was always trying to casually pry for information about Juniper and Shanley.
Aside from trying to use her as a stepping stone to network with them, what else could it be?
She had just been too polite to call him out on it.
But now she understood.
Being tolerant of others just meant being cruel to herself.
Since he was refusing to take a hint, why should she put up with his garbage rumors?
If he crossed the line again, she would drop the polite act entirely and expose his disgusting true colors.
"Your eyes are clear."
Melvin's mood instantly skyrocketed. Thinking back to the late-night drinking binge he had gone on a few days ago...
He had suffered through all that cheap alcohol for nothing?!
"My eyes are fine. I have perfect 20/20 vision."
Janet's chin ached slightly. She frowned, parting her lips to add, "You're lecturing me, but you're keeping secrets from Juniper yourself."
"What secrets?"
Caught off guard by her remark, Melvin didn't immediately process it.
"N-Nothing."
Janet was so nervous she almost bit her own tongue. She quickly shook her head to deny it. "Don't you have an emergency to get back to? You should go."
"Yeah."
