"No way!" Melvin Steele pursed his lips, the smile never leaving his face. "Janet usually looks so soft-spoken, but her rebuttals were incredibly sharp."
"She's tough on the inside!" Juniper looked up at Janet, the corners of her mouth curling into a smile full of admiration. "Growing up in that kind of environment, enduring all that hardship and coldness, she doesn't open her heart to just anyone. Melvin, you've got a long and difficult road ahead of you."
Melvin listened quietly, his gaze deepening.
It was just difficult, not impossible.
And he loved a good challenge.
"Juniper, can you tell me what Janet's hobbies are?" Melvin leaned in, flashing a flattering smile.
"Of course." Juniper nodded, slowly pulling her phone from her pocket and pulling up her payment code. "How much you find out depends on how much you're willing to pay."
Melvin frowned, took out his phone, and jabbed at the screen to transfer the money. "Juniper, that old fox is a terrible influence on you."
"Thanks."
Seeing the amount, Juniper's lips curved in satisfaction. She leaned in. "Janet..."
"What? Tell me."
Melvin immediately perked up his ears, afraid he might miss a single word.
"She's actually a very boring person. She doesn't like shopping, isn't a foodie, and doesn't care for jewelry. She just loves to read."
"That's it?"
Melvin frowned, questioning her.
"Yep, that's all." Juniper raised an eyebrow, smiling like a mischievous little fox.
"Ha!"
Melvin's lips twitched as a soft chuckle escaped his throat.
Birds of a feather flock together, huh.
A little fox raised by that old fox.
Loves to read?
Heaven knew, the thing he hated most in this world was reading.
He hadn't touched a book since he graduated from college.
