"Don't cry."
Startled by her tears, Jimmie Tate gently cupped her face and kissed the dampness away. "My parents aren't mad. They just need a little time to adjust. No matter what happens, I will always stand by you. I swear it, Luella."
"No, it's not that." Luella Langley shook her head, crying even harder, her words catching in her throat. "Your parents are just so wonderful. I'm so overwhelmed."
Jimmie's body relaxed, and he secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
"Jimmie, Juniper is great, you're great, and your parents are amazing..." Luella looked up, her eyes red as a rabbit's. "I'm just so, so incredibly happy to be part of your family."
"I know." Jimmie gently stroked her brow. She was a girl who had lacked love her whole life; just a little bit of warmth was enough to move her to tears.
"I'll make sure you're even happier from now on." He pinched her cheek affectionately. "When are you flying back to Stellara Country?"
"Tonight." She nestled deeper into his embrace, her voice soft. "Once I'm gone, you better behave yourself, you hear me?!"
"Loud and clear." He pressed a kiss to her forehead. His thumb brushed against her fingers, lingering on the ring he had given her.
...
That evening, Jimmie dropped Luella off at the airport and watched her board the plane.
On his drive back, a breaking news alert popped up on his phone: *[Exposed: The Genius Teen is a Genetic Monster]*
It included two blatant hints: *A celebrity brother* and *A perfect scorer*.
Jimmie's grip on the steering wheel tightened, a chilling light flashing in his eyes.
There were only two perfect scorers.
That old fox, Shanley.
And Juniper.
Genius teen, celebrity brother, perfect scorer.
They were talking about Juniper!
A genetic monster? How could his sister possibly be a genetic monster?!
Theia Sommers and Silas Blackwood, the three brothers, Ebony Fox, and Coralie Quill were all present.
Celine Sherwin was pregnant, so they hadn't dared to let her in on the news.
The atmosphere was suffocating.
"What exactly happened back then?" Harold Houston asked, his brows tightly knit and his voice hoarse. "I've tested Juniper's genes and blood. There's no difference between her and a normal person. How could she have been modified?"
Everyone else turned to Theia and Silas, waiting for an answer.
Could it be that their parents were lying just to keep Juniper from getting hurt?!
Just as the couple hesitated, Ebony Fox spoke up. "They just posted more evidence online. They're proving that Juniper is a genetic mutant."
Everyone checked their phones, finding dozens of reports all linked to Juniper Payne.
There was even a video of the modification process, seemingly cementing the claim that she was a monster.
