“Based on the data, there’s evidence of a biological parent-child relationship between Subject A and Subject B.”
Wiona stared at the result, feeling like the world had just split open. She was completely frozen.
“He’s really my father?”
The words just sat there, heavy and impossible to swallow.
Conrad didn’t say anything. He just gave her a look, as if to say, It’s not that simple.
Something inside her clicked. Wiona started flipping through the rest of the documents. The stack was thick, filled with paternity reports from all sorts of labs.
She didn’t have to look far before she found one with the opposite result.
“Based on the data, a biological parent-child relationship between A and B is excluded.”
“Why are there so many reports?” Wiona asked, her voice thin. “And why do they say different things?”
She turned to Conrad. “How many tests did you do? What is going on?”
Conrad finally spoke. “The first report is from the hospital. That was back when you were on bed rest. I worried it would upset you, so I didn’t give it to you.”
“And honestly, I didn’t believe the result.”
“That man, Wilson, acted so calm and sure of himself when my people went to collect the sample. He even bragged that you would come pick him up yourself.”
“But after being ignored for so long, he’s gotten restless. Lately, he keeps asking if the results are ready.”
“He also demanded another test under his own name.”
Wiona frowned. “So, he’s convinced the test will prove he’s my biological father.”
“Either he really is, or there’s something much darker going on.”
“So, which one is real?”
She dug to the bottom of the pile and found more reports, these from labs overseas.
Every single one said no. No biological relationship.
Had Conrad sent samples abroad too?
Conrad touched her hair gently. “Let’s go home. We’ll talk there.”
“I think Ms. Kutz might have some answers for you.”
He glanced at his watch. “If you can catch Madison, she probably has something to add too.”
Summer nodded. “Alright, Wiona. I wanted to tell you about Wilson before you gave birth, actually.”
“So, should we save it for later?”
“Kyle’s running the family now, and honestly, things are a lot calmer.”
Madison looked at Wiona. “Do you think you’ll ever go back home?”
She hesitated, then added, “Mom told me recently that she was reall horrible before. She said she should never have been so weak, never should have given up on you.”
“Kyle hasn’t said it out loud, but… I think he regrets it too.”
“Could you really not give them another chance?”
Wiona looked away. “What kind of chance? Pretend nothing happened? Start over like we’re just one big happy family?”
“I know the Morgan family raised me. I’m grateful for that. But what they did hurt. That’s real too.”
“Maybe time will help us all heal.”
She didn’t close the door completely. There was real love in those years, too.
If Madison wanted to make things right with her family, that was her decision. Wiona wouldn’t get involved.
Madison seemed a little disappointed, but she didn’t press the issue.
After a while, Summer came in, looking more settled, guided by one of the housekeepers.
Wiona was back at the table, studying the reports. She noticed something odd. When Conrad came in from the study, she told him quietly, “Every single test from the labs in Stonehill said there’s a parent-child relationship.”
