Wiona glanced at the door, surprised not to see Conrad anywhere.
Peter stepped in, trying to reassure her. “Mr. Sullivan had something urgent come up. He’ll be back in about half an hour.”
Wiona helped Summer change into fresh clothes. When she saw a bit of color return to Summer’s cheeks, she led her downstairs to the restaurant. Summer looked relieved to leave that room behind.
On the way down, Summer was clearly anxious. She clung to Wiona’s arm, barely letting go until they were inside a private dining room. Only then did Summer finally let out a shaky breath.
She didn’t want Wiona to get the wrong idea, so Summer started explaining, “Back when I was in Easton Heights, during the worst of it, he watched me so closely. He always knew who I talked to, even who I made eye contact with.”
“I’m honestly scared he’ll snap again.”
“I thought coming back to Stonehill would make him act a little more normal.”
“But I really underestimated him...”
Her lips twisted with a bitter smile.
“My dad already told you what happened, didn’t he?”
“Wiona, do you think I’m just pathetic?”
“We both got trapped in terrible marriages, but you managed to break free on your own. I’m just this caged bird, with someone’s hands around my throat. I can’t even fight back.”
“And now my son Leo has to suffer with me...”
Just saying Leo’s name made Summer’s eyes fill with tears.
Her little boy...
Now that Wiona was a mom herself, she could feel that pain deep in her bones. She quietly handed Summer a tissue.
“Cassian mentioned a little about what you’ve been through,” Wiona said softly.
“Don’t worry, Summer. Like you said, this is Stonehill.”
“It’s not some place he can just do whatever he wants.”
“Here’s what we’ll do. You and Cassian can come stay at my place for a while. I’ll ask Conrad to help get Leo back.”
Summer stopped mid-sob, staring at Wiona.
“What?”
Con...rad...?
Wait, what did Wiona just call her husband?
Just then, a knock sounded at the door.
Conrad came in, looking calm and put together. “I’m not late, am I?”
He walked straight over, kissed Wiona on the forehead, then sat down beside her, glancing politely at Summer.
“Hello.”
Summer was completely stunned.
“Wiona... is this your husband?”
“I thought maybe he had something to do with the Sullivan Group. I even guessed he might be some high-up executive...”
“But I never imagined he was the head of the Sullivan Group. The actual Mr. Sullivan. Conrad Sullivan.”
She had seen his face before. He was always on those lists of the world’s most eligible bachelors, ranked way at the top.
“For now, let’s eat something, okay?”
“You must be starving. You’ll feel stronger after you eat.”
“Oh, and Cassian is still worried about you. I texted him to let him know you’re safe, but honestly, you shouldn’t let him see you like this just yet.”
“So maybe you two don’t meet today?”
With Wiona calmly taking charge, Summer finally seemed to relax. She nodded and picked up her fork, eating slowly.
After they finished, Conrad pulled out a file and handed it to Wiona.
“Take a look at this,” he said.
Wiona was puzzled. Judging by his serious face, she guessed it had something to do with her. And since he gave it to her right in front of Summer, maybe it was about both of them?
She pulled the papers out and her eyes landed on the bold letters at the top: Paternity Test Report.
Was this about her and Wilson?
After that time at the nursing home, Conrad had taken over the whole thing.
It had been ages since then. So much had happened. The mess at Hawthorne Hall, Jace’s wedding, her own babies being born.
A simple test that should have taken a few days had dragged on until now.
Wiona knew there had been problems with the process, but wasn’t this delay a bit much?
And why was the report so thick?
Wiona quickly flipped to the results.
