“But the ones you sent to other cities or overseas all came back negative.”
“Conrad, seriously, what’s really going on?”
Conrad sat next to her, his tone steady. “All those labs use equipment from the same company.”
“The Kunda Group. The Thompsons.”
Summer’s eyes widened. “Wait, you mean the Thompsons from Easton Heights?”
“I know about them. The Kunda Group makes the best testing equipment and machinery in the country. No one else even comes close.”
“The Thompsons are just as powerful as the Tuckers in Easton Heights.”
Wiona frowned. “But why would my past be tangled up with the Thompsons? How did things get so complicated?”
She was lost, but the more confusing it got, the more she wanted answers. She shook her head, refusing to back down. “So you’re saying there’s something wrong with the equipment or the labs?”
Conrad nodded. “My people investigated and traced the problem back to the Thompsons.”
“Wiona, someone’s trying to make you become Wilson’s daughter.”
“They already know who you are. They know you’re my wife, and maybe even the truth about your past.”
“So any sample sent out from the Sullivan family gets an automatic positive result. They just stamp it and move on.”
Wiona stared at him, disbelief in her voice. “Are they out of their minds?”
“How can you be sure the reports are fake?”
“I sent Phil and Alice’s samples, and I even sent Peter and Shelly’s hair. Every one of them came back as parent and child.”
“They’re just making up whatever they want. It’s a circus.”
Wiona fell silent. Was the Thompson family really the puppet masters behind all of this? But what did they want with her, and why go to such lengths?
Conrad could see she was struggling to make sense of it all. He reached for her hand and squeezed gently. “Relax. We’ll take it step by step. I’m not letting you figure this out alone.”
Wiona let out a long breath, then straightened her back. “You’re right. We’ll get to the truth.”
Once she’d calmed down, Conrad continued. “At first, I didn’t think it was the Thompsons.”
“You know Dr. Rodman. He’d never let anyone on his staff fake results.”
“But the data from his hospital was still wrong.”
“Then I learned that the Thompsons have their own tech people in every lab that uses their equipment.”
“That’s the only thing those labs had in common.”
Wiona thought it through. “So the Thompsons are helping Wilson.”
“If a lab uses their machines, the results say I’m Wilson’s daughter. But if they don’t, it’s negative.”
“It’s like she went from comfortable to desperate overnight. She cries all the time, but she won’t talk about what happened. She looks like she’s falling apart.”
Two months ago... wasn’t that right around when Wilson got arrested?
Wiona’s mind was racing, a new theory taking shape. She just needed proof.
“Madison, please ask Lisa to keep an eye on Mary.”
“And if you can, I need a biological sample from her twin daughters.”
Madison looked at the reports on the table and caught on instantly. She gasped, her mouth falling open. “You think...”
“No way.”
“Would Mary really do something that crazy?”
Wiona knew it sounded wild. But right now, it was just a gut feeling.
“I hope I’m wrong.”
Madison pulled herself together and nodded. “Leave it to me.”
“I’ll talk to Mary myself.”
Summer, who’d been following the conversation, added quietly, “If this is about Wilson’s personal life and his reputation... I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s all true.”
