“I knew Kellen was poison for the Salisbury family, so I teamed up with her behind the scenes. That’s why you got caught up in that hotel scandal.”
“I’m the one who kidnapped Bianca. I wanted Alona’s daughter to feel what it’s like to be completely powerless, just like we were.”
“And I swapped out Daniel’s meds, made his illness worse, little by little. He ended up so weak he couldn’t even get out of bed, just like what happened to my mom.”
“I even made sure he suffered when he died. I hired someone to humiliate him, to make him experience the same pain my mother went through.”
“Hate me, Jace.”
“Hate me.”
“At least that way, you might get some relief.”
“Hate me!”
Jace felt shock and a deep sadness for everything Isaac suffered as a kid. But that didn’t mean he could ever forgive what Isaac had done.
He didn’t bother saying anything else. As Jace stood to leave, he tossed out a few words. “I’ll get you a lawyer.”
Not to fight for him. Just because he needed one.
It was probably the only thing Jace would ever do for his brother.
Jace walked out of the detention center in a daze and headed straight for the prison.
He went to see Alona and told her about Daniel’s death.
Alona clapped her hands, actually smiling. “His own bastard son killed him?”
She laughed. “Good. That’s just perfect.”
“Karma. It’s all karma!”
Jace watched his mother, who seemed decades older, and felt an ache settle in his chest.
“Bianca probably isn’t coming back,” he said quietly.
“Mom, just do your time. When you get out… I’ll be here waiting for you.”
Watching Alona laugh and cry at the same time, Jace felt a hundred kinds of heartache.
When he left the prison, he looked up. Rain was falling, light and steady.
Jace felt like every bit of his pride had been crushed into dust. There was nothing left except to accept the hand life had dealt him.
He took out his phone and called Neil. “Hey… can you help me find a job?”
“You said I should start from the bottom. I’m ready for that, if you’ll help.”
