“You finally ended up in my hands.”
Wiona didn’t even need to see—she knew that voice. “Kellen? Are you the one who tied me up? What do you even want?”
Kellen gave a short, harsh laugh. “What do I want? Come on, take a guess.”
Wiona tried to pinpoint where Kellen was standing, listening carefully. “Let me warn you, you’d better not do anything illegal. Right now, all you’re facing is some gossip and people talking behind your back. If you do anything to me, you’ll actually end up in jail. Think about it.”
Kellen’s face twisted in anger. “Shut up. At this point, what difference does it make? Prison, being mocked and hated by everyone, getting abandoned—none of it matters anymore. But don’t worry, Wiona. Even if I go down, I’m not going alone. You’re coming with me.”
She lifted her hand, ready to slap Wiona. “You think you can lecture me?”
But before she could, John stepped in and grabbed her wrist.
“Hold on.”
John glared at her, already impatient. “Where’s my cut? I did my homework. This woman isn’t just some nobody. You think you can mess with her without giving me anything? And if things go wrong, am I just supposed to take the blame for you? Pay up. Otherwise, don’t even think about touching her today.”
Kellen’s face went stiff.
“Dad! I’m your daughter. Why would I ever set you up?”
John rolled his eyes. “Don’t act so innocent. You’ve lied to me plenty of times. Remember when you started college? You got down on your knees and swore you’d fix up the house for me, find your brother a wife. Did you keep any of those promises? Even when you caught yourself a rich man, did you once think of me? I should’ve married you off to that guy from the next village who offered two hundred thousand for you. With that money, your brother would have had a wife years ago. Maybe he wouldn’t have ended up getting into trouble in the city. You’ve always been bad luck for this family. Just like your mother, both of you have rotten hearts. I stopped trusting you ages ago. How many times did you fool me this year? Every time I gave you another chance, and every time, I got nothing. Not a cent. Now, hurry up. Or I swear, I’ll call the cops right now.”
Kellen felt a chill run through her, but she tried to keep her voice steady. “Stop, don’t. Dad, I can’t believe you’re still squeezing me for more, even now. Fine. Take this, for all those years you raised me, alright? But after this, that’s it. We’re done.”
She yanked the ring off her finger and shoved it into his hand. That diamond was worth a small fortune, at least enough to keep him quiet for a while. Even so, her heart ached as she handed it over.
But John wasn’t happy. He weighed the ring in his palm and sneered. “This little thing? You think that’s all I’m worth? Kellen, you are Jace’s wife, and this is the best you can do for your own father? You’re not planning to do something to this woman and make me take the heat, are you? If that happens, this ring won’t save me. I’ll end up in jail too. Is that what you want?”
His face grew darker as he stared at her, like he could see right through her.
