George had just come back looking for him, and the sight of Jace stopped him cold. He rushed over, worry written all over his face. “Jace, what happened? Oh my God, you’re bleeding. You need a hospital, come on, let’s go.”
But Jace suddenly went quiet. He just sat there on the floor, staring at the blood on his hands. Then, out of nowhere, he started laughing. It was a raw, broken sound.
“I lost the one person I was supposed to love. I did it myself. She was my wife. I let someone like Kellen convince me to make her carry someone else’s child. I made her drink something to get rid of the baby. I forced her to climb out a window during a storm. I kicked her out of her own bedroom, made her live in the garden. I slapped her. I made her apologize to Kellen. She got kidnapped because of all the mess from my family. She almost died, again and again. She saved me, she saved Grandma. But what did I ever do for her? Nothing. I just kept pushing her into the worst situations, and I didn’t even realize it.”
He laughed again, the sound painful and wild. “It was me. I did all those terrible things. This… this is what I deserve.”
Suddenly, everything came rushing back. He remembered how he’d fallen for Wiona without even noticing. He remembered breaking up with Kellen, for good. He remembered that their divorce hadn’t happened as soon as everyone thought. The only woman he ever really wanted to marry… it was always her.
“Wiona,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry…”
The tears came, mixing with his laughter. He looked unhinged, lost.
George watched, his heart heavy. “Jace, listen to me. It’s not too late. If you know you messed up, you can still make it right. Grandma Grace tried so hard to bring you and Wiona together. She always said Wiona was the only girl good enough for you… for this family. Think about it. When Wiona was here, those years were the best we ever had. The company was thriving, the stocks kept climbing, everything was going right for you and your father. But after you and Wiona started fighting, everything started to fall apart. First your mom, then Grandma Grace, then your sister… now you and your dad are both struggling. The company’s on the edge of bankruptcy. Your dad’s selling off everything just to keep up appearances. The family is falling apart. If you really marry Kellen, do you think there’s any hope left for the Salisburys? Jace, if you can wake up now, Grandma Grace can finally rest easy. Go get Wiona back. She’s carrying your child.”
Jace just shook his head, a hollow smile on his face. “No. It’s too late, George. You don’t understand. It’s already too late.”
