When she stepped into the real world, Kellen realized she wasn’t cut out for any job. Jace’s love had spoiled her so completely that she couldn’t imagine going back to her old, poor, ordinary life. She was used to being pampered, used to feeling important, and the thought of returning to the Castro family and that remote mountain town felt like a nightmare she’d never escape. Her past was her shame, the thing that kept her from marrying into the world she desperately wanted. And now, with John suddenly back, her new life felt even more threatened.
That’s why she’d wanted to take advantage of the chaos around Wiona, to get rid of her father once and for all. But now it was all over. Her perfect wedding, the one she’d dreamed about for years, was ruined. The happiness she’d waited so long for slipped right through her fingers. She had been so close to stepping into a life of luxury, to finally becoming the glamorous Wiona she’d always imagined.
Instead, her ugly past had been dragged into the light. Everyone knew her secrets from abroad. Her messy history was out in the open for all to see. It was like being stripped bare in public, with every bit of her pride and dignity ripped away. Her wedding was a disaster. Her dreams were shattered. And then, as if that wasn’t enough, she’d just killed her own groom.
Kellen stared at her hands, hating herself. So when she heard Wiona had been caught, her heart pounded with excitement.
“Dad, are you serious? You really got her?”
“Was it so hard?” John snapped. “Unlike you, I actually get things done. She was shoved out with the crowd, sure, there were a couple of bodyguards, but I just tossed a smoke bomb. Everyone lost their heads. Snatching her up in the confusion was easy. I’m in the north building, fourth-floor stairwell. She’s about to wake up. If you don’t get here, I’ll have to let her go. You decide.”
Kellen scrambled up from the floor. “I’m coming. Dad, don’t let her go. I’ll be there.”
“You have ten minutes,” John said before hanging up.
Her hands were shaking as she put her phone away. She glanced at Jace, still lying motionless on the floor, and squeezed her eyes shut.
“Don’t blame me,” she whispered. “Jace, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. If your family hadn’t forced you to marry Wiona, we’d still be together. We were perfect for each other. We were in love. It’s all Wiona’s fault. If it weren’t for that arranged marriage, we never would have been separated, and I wouldn’t have gone abroad and made all those stupid mistakes. Jace, please don’t hate me. I didn’t have a choice.”
Her voice grew cold. “Wiona, if I can’t be happy, then neither can you.”
Kellen put all her hate on Wiona. She could feel it boiling up inside, wild and uncontrollable. Lifting her skirt, she didn’t even look at Jace again. She just ran out.
As soon as she left, Jace slowly sat up, holding his head. He saw blood on his palm. His face was pale. He didn’t move for a long moment. He remembered Kellen saying something, but what was it? His head ached, sharp and deep. He pressed his hands to his temples as memories came crashing back all at once.
He saw Wiona’s smile, her gentle voice. He remembered her anger, her sadness, the way resentment had built up between them, turning them into strangers.
“Jace, I’m so lucky to have you.”
“Jace, IVF is tough, but I want to try. I want our baby.”
