Wiona shot her a tired look. “That’s a stretch, don’t you think? Did you really think I wanted that arranged marriage?”

“You didn’t want it? Why not?” Kellen snapped. “Jace is amazing, literally perfect. He’s the man of my dreams. What, you think you’re too good for him?”

Wiona almost laughed at how far gone Kellen sounded. She was so worked up, she’d started spitting, and some landed right on Wiona’s face. It was gross.

Wiona didn’t bother to answer, but Kellen just got louder. “And if you didn’t want it, why didn’t you say no? You went through with it because you’re vain. You’re the reason Jace and I got split up.”

Wiona rolled her eyes, exasperated. “Do you even get what a family alliance is? It’s a marriage for business, not love. If it wasn’t me, it would’ve been someone else, probably from another family. Did you really think you’d be the one chosen? Besides, Jace and I never had any feelings for each other after we got married. Isn’t that exactly what you wanted?”

A small, smug smile crept onto Kellen’s lips. “Yeah, and so what? You married him, you got the Salisbury name. Big deal. His heart was always mine. His body was mine.
