Chapter 81
Calista glanced back at Roxanne, not out of resentment, but confusion. Her shift in demeanor had
been too abrupt, and it was hard to get a proper read on her.
“Why are you staring at me like that?” Roxanne’s expression tightened as soon as she caught
Calista’s gaze.
“Nothing. I’m on it,” Calista said calmly. She dropped her gaze and walked toward the seat she had been assigned.
The moment she sat down, she realized just how bad the spot actually was.
Not only was it shoved next to an overflowing trash bin, but the air reeked of something foul and
rotting.
Worse still, a few flies drifted lazily above her head, making her seriously question whether this was really the headquarters of the legendary Fenwick Group.
Even by the lowest standards, the hygiene here was barely acceptable.
Before she had time to think further, Roxanne was already back, dropping a hefty stack of files
onto her desk without warning.
“I need the key data extracted from these before lunch. It’s for the afternoon meeting. You got that?
Roxanne barely glanced at Calista as she offloaded the backlog of work she had already been
avoiding for days.
Calista placed her bag under the desk and stared at the documents stacked neatly in front of her.
Lunch was still three hours out. If she hustled, she just might be able to pull it off.
“Got it,” she replied and rolled up her sleeves, ready to dive into work.
Just then, Roxanne gestured toward two more leaning towers of documents. “And that pile over there. And the other one next to it, too. Go through all of them. Keep it moving, alright?”
Calista followed Roxanne’s gesture and spotted another two stacks of documents–these nearly waist–high. Instinctively, she let out a quiet sigh.
“Understood.”
She was new. She didn’t have room to complain–not yet, at least.
