Chapter 6
Ophelia was speechless. She’d never imagined that Calista’s departure would affect Lucien this much. He didn’t even love Calista, so why was he reacting like this?
What should have been a family dinner ended in disaster. Ophelia stood frozen for a few seconds before snapping back to reality. Worried, she chased after him. But his Porsche Cayenne was too fast, and her Mercedes couldn’t keep up.
Rain was pouring down from the dark sky. Lightning split through the clouds, followed by booming thunder. On the busy streets filled with traffic, one car drove like a maniac, weaving dangerously between vehicles.
When Lucien reached the Juniville estate, he pushed past a maid who was about to leave and stormed through the familiar living room. His eyes fell on the couch.
Calista always loved sprawling there to watch mindless TV shows. No matter how late it was or what time he returned home, there was always a familiar figure waiting for him.
For a moment, Lucien felt disoriented. He could almost see her again–running to him barefoot the moment she saw him return, throwing her arms around him.
“Honey, you’re home!”
But the vision lasted only an instant before dissolving into nothing. The entire living room felt cold and empty.
“Where is she?”
Clover’s eyes darted nervously. “Mrs. Fenwick hasn’t been back since you left on your business trip.”
Calista had been back home in Brego recovering from her injuries. Over a month had passed, and her wounds had mostly healed. By her calculations, Lucien should have been back for about two weeks now.
Calista couldn’t tell if she felt relieved or disappointed. During this time, Lucien hadn’t made any moves regarding her departure.
She figured that it was probably for the best. She’d given up hope anyway. Once he signed the papers, he could finally be with Ophelia like he’d always wanted.
She hadn’t actually seen Rebecca during this visit. Instead, she was hiding out in Anthony’s newly renovated house, recovering in private while he covered for her.
