Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 530

Wesley nodded. He had known Julian would tell her.

Connecting the dots—the so-called 'accident,' the family of the deceased suddenly targeting the Rayburn Group, and the way public opinion had been so deliberately skewed against her—Charlotte realized it had all been a carefully orchestrated plot.

"It's being handled," Wesley assured her. "You don't need to worry."

"I know," Charlotte said softly, "but it's hard not to feel terrible when I see you getting hurt because of me."

"I'm perfectly fine," he said with an exasperated smile. "It was just a few scratches, and trust me, they got the worst of it. Your brother isn't that easy to push around."

His attempt at reassurance made her smile.

As Wesley ate, she suddenly remembered something. "What did you and… Mr. Evander talk about today?" she asked quietly.

Wesley's brow twitched almost imperceptibly as he looked up. "Why are you so interested in him?"

She faltered, looking away. "I was just asking. What if he was threatening you or something?"

He saw right through her but didn't press the issue. "You should stop worrying about me and start worrying about yourself. Don't fall into the same trap twice."

The last sentence was loaded with meaning, but before Charlotte could ponder it, her phone rang. Seeing it was Lilith, she turned away to answer. "What's wrong?"

"Charlotte, I just got scammed!"

Lilith's voice was a mixture of anger and distress, and for once, it sounded genuine.

"How?"

Lilith explained that she had tried to rent a temporary apartment. The 'landlord' she found online told her she needed to pay a two-thousand-dollar deposit, which she transferred without a second thought. But when she went to see the apartment today, the real landlord had never heard of her. The unit she wanted was already occupied by a tenant who was months behind on rent.

The actual deposit was only two hundred dollars. She'd been scammed out of ten times that amount, had gotten lost trying to take a cab, and now her phone was at five percent battery.

Charlotte took a deep breath. "Miss Sutherland, you really have no idea how the world works, do you? What kind of apartment requires a two-thousand-dollar deposit? Use your head."
