The convenience store owner glanced at the car parked by the curb and, as if spotting a regular, walked over to greet him. "Just getting off work? Grabbing some beer again, the usual?"
Judd nodded. "The usual."
The owner remembered his regulars, and this man was particularly memorable. He was the only one who ever bought a specific brand of imported beer that didn't sell very well.
Lilith turned at the sound of his voice, and her eyes widened in disbelief. It was like seeing a savior.
"It's you!" she exclaimed, her face lighting up as she hurried over. "Perfect timing!"
Judd frowned, but before he could speak, the owner asked, looking puzzled, "You two know each other?"
"Old friends!" Lilith jumped in before Judd could answer. "Talk about a miracle. Sir, don't you worry. How much was that portable charger? I'll pay you!"
"It's only a few bucks, don't worry about it," the owner said with a wave of his hand. "If you wanted to buy the whole unit, you could've just paid with the app." He turned and went back inside to get the beer.
"Thank you! You're a lifesaver!" Lilith chirped, grinning from ear to ear.
"Miss Sutherland," Judd said coolly. "What are you doing here?"
She turned to him. "Isn't it obvious? I'm lost. It's a small world, running into you of all people."
"Lost?"
"Oh, right. Do you have, say, five hundred dollars you can lend me?"
Judd was speechless. "What are you talking about, Miss Sutherland?"
"I'm going to pay you back," she insisted, her face twisting into a look of wounded innocence. She launched into a frantic explanation. "I had money, I swear, but… I got scammed. I was supposed to have Charlotte pick me up, but then my phone died. I walked for ages to get here, and my credit card has a temporary hold on it, so I couldn't even… The owner had to pay for the portable charger for me! I literally have no cash on me."
Judd listened silently, then gave a slight nod. "Then why didn't you call your cousin, Evander?"
Lilith froze.
She took a deep, steadying breath. "Look, I ran into you. Why go through all the extra trouble of calling him and waiting for him to get here when you could just help me now? You lend me the money, and I'll pay you back tomorrow. It's the same thing."
