She had wanted this divorce so badly. Now that it was final, she felt no joy at all. It seemed all her love and hatred had vanished in the smoke of that explosion.
Ten days after the incident, the Vinterberg mansion was under constant police surveillance. Until his name was cleared, Neely was forbidden from leaving the country, his every move watched.
In his study, Neely sat by the window, smoking. His phone buzzed on the desk. He tapped the ash from his cigarette and answered. After listening for a moment, he stubbed out the cigarette in an ashtray and doused it with the red wine from his glass. “I’m fine here. You just enjoy your honeymoon with your wife. Make sure you treat her right.”
Shortly after he hung up, Magee entered the room. “Boss…” he began, but Neely raised a hand, silencing him and gesturing toward the bedroom.
Magee understood and followed him inside.
“Boss, the police are still investigating, but I’ve dealt with the temporary hires. The rest of our trusted men have been sent to find Granville, just as you ordered.”
“Good.” Neely toyed with a lion-head ornament in his hand. “It’s a pity. That explosion killed a Howard but couldn’t take out that bastard from the Carstairs family.”
“If it weren’t for your mercy, giving them a chance to escape, they all would have died!” Magee flattered.
Neely chuckled. “Prey should be toyed with before it’s killed. But watching Hugh blow up was the most satisfying part. That’s the end all cowards deserve.”
“You’re absolutely right, boss,” Magee agreed.
“By the way, the Howard family must still be in mourning for Evander, right?”
“Well… there hasn’t been much news from the Capital. I suppose without a body, the family doesn’t want to officially acknowledge it.”
Neely stood and walked to the window. “It doesn’t matter. The Howard family is in chaos. You can contact my person there now.”
