“I’ll handle the rest of the Rayburns,” Wesley interjected calmly. “Dad, you just focus on the Donovan family. As for my sister…” He looked at Charlotte with gentle eyes. “She can do whatever makes her happy.”
Charlotte was taken aback, a small ripple disturbing the stillness of her grief-stricken heart.
“Wesley’s right. We’ll take care of everything, Dad. You don’t need to worry,” Sean reassured the old man.
His words seemed to put Old Mr. Donovan at ease.
After dinner, Wesley drove Charlotte back to Gardenia Apartments. Before she got out of the car, he asked, “Lottie, are you planning on staying in Riverspire City?”
Charlotte was silent for a few seconds. “I like it here. Besides, I promised my mentor I would see this project through. I can’t just abandon it.” She turned to look at him. “Is something wrong with the family?”
“No, nothing’s wrong,” he said, resting his hand on her head. “I was just asking. You focus on your work. And by the way, don’t stay at Gardenia Apartments anymore. I bought you a house in The Dockside District. The security is much better than an apartment, and it’s not far from the hospital. You should move in.”
“You shouldn’t have spent so much money.”
“It’s nothing. You’re my sister. What’s mine is yours.”
His words brought a small smile to her face.
“There you are,” he said, watching her. “You finally smiled.”
Her smile faded as sadness washed over her again. Wesley knew she had been despondent over Evander’s death, and it pained him to see her like this.
Back at her apartment, Charlotte was fumbling for her keys when she ran into Judd, who was also just returning home. He had been injured protecting her in the water and had needed several stitches in his arm.
“Professor Carstairs, how’s your arm?”
“It’s fine,” Judd said. He walked past her to his own door, then paused. “I’m glad you’re okay.” With that, he went inside. Charlotte entered her own apartment.
