All around her, Janice could only hear the whispered gossip—salacious speculation about Cynthia and Dominic, each rumor more scandalous than the last.
She noticed Father Benedict’s expression darken amid the chatter. Without hesitation, Janice rounded on the gossips.
“Don’t talk nonsense. Cynthia isn’t that kind of person,” she snapped.
A girl standing beside her tugged her sleeve, whispering quickly, “But when that bitch tried to drag you through the mud just now, Cynthia didn’t say a word in your defense.”
“And the way she acted with Mr. Holloway… You can tell they’re way too familiar. Clearly, they’ve known each other for ages.”
Janice shot a worried glance at Benedict, but under everyone’s watchful eyes, she didn’t dare approach him.
When he strode out of the room, face stormy, Janice closed her eyes for a moment. To protect her own reputation, she nudged her friend.
“Lilian, go after Benedict for me, would you? Try to calm him down. I’m worried he’ll do something reckless.”
Dominic Holloway wasn’t someone you could afford to cross.
Besides, she remembered what Benedict had told her: Dominic now held a 20% stake in VistaSphere Group.
And with the group’s accounts flush with cash again, their real concern should be figuring out how to siphon that money out before Dominic got a handle on everything.
If they waited too long, and Dominic gained a thorough understanding of VistaSphere Group’s operations, getting any more money out would be nearly impossible.
Janice chewed her lip, wondering if Cynthia had grown suspicious after Giselle’s outburst today.
A shadow flickered in her eyes, but she managed to school her features into a calm, pleasant smile for her classmates. Her voice was gentle, reassuring.
“I’m sorry tonight’s dinner got spoiled by all this drama with Benedict. Let me pick up the tab for everyone.”
If Cynthia ever discovered that Benedict had been funneling company assets into the Ormond family’s accounts, she’d come down on them without mercy.
“Dad, just to be safe, we need to make sure everyone who ever saw the Ormond family’s accounts is kept quiet. Double-check, please—there can’t be any trail.”
Benedict had sent over quite a bit of money these past years; the latest transfer alone had been over four hundred thousand.
To be safe, they’d cooked the books, let the factory sit idle, and even repaid VistaSphere Group fifty thousand as a cover.
But if Cynthia really decided to investigate, and caught even a whiff of evidence, Benedict’s collusion and embezzlement would land him in prison.
Benedict still thought Cynthia might show him some mercy.
But Janice, being a woman herself, understood all too well—if Cynthia ever got her hands on proof, she’d send Benedict straight to jail without a second thought.
