Seeing that he clearly didn’t want to engage, Cynthia quietly looked away and let the conversation drop. She knew if she kept pushing the topic of the project, she’d only end up annoying him, so she wisely chose to stay silent.
She sat quietly in her seat, keeping to herself until the driver finally pulled up in front of The Tremaines. Only then did Cynthia steal a cautious glance at the man beside her.
He still had his eyes closed—she couldn’t tell if he was actually asleep or just pretending. Erring on the side of politeness, she spoke up.
“Mr. Holloway, I’m home.”
Dominic opened his eyes at her words. His deep gaze fell on her, unreadable emotion flickering in his eyes.
Cynthia pressed her lips together and bent forward to get out of the car.
Just as she was about to step out, Dominic—who hadn’t planned to say a word—reached over and caught her wrist, his voice low and steady.
“Tomorrow morning, we’re heading back to Cloudcrest City.”
She nodded.
“Alright.”
She’d been planning to return to Cloudcrest City tomorrow, anyway.
Dominic gave her one last searching look before finally letting her go.
Cynthia closed the car door, and the driver pulled away almost immediately.
She didn’t move until Dominic’s car had disappeared from sight. Only then did she lower her eyes, glancing at her hand—memories of Dominic holding her in the game room flashed through her mind. Taking a deep breath, she steadied herself and walked into The Tremaines.
Juliet hadn’t gone into the office today. She was working from home.
When Cynthia stepped into the living room, Juliet’s assistant was just hurrying out of the study. The assistant greeted her politely, then rushed off.
Cynthia knocked lightly and entered Juliet’s office.
Juliet was reviewing a stack of documents. She glanced up briefly at Cynthia, then returned her attention to her work, her tone mild.
“Nothing happened between me and Dominic, honestly.”
Juliet gave a noncommittal hum. “I’m just saying, if you ever do want something to happen, be smart about it.”
Cynthia clammed up, realizing the conversation was definitely going nowhere good.
She quickly changed the subject.
“This morning, Mr. Holloway took me to check out a new project.”
Juliet put down her pen and looked at her, waiting for her to continue.
Cynthia pulled out the chair opposite Juliet’s desk and sat down.
“There’s a new arcade on Sycamore Lane—it’s called ‘The Survival Room’. I went with Mr. Holloway to try it out. The experience was amazing, and honestly, their equipment and set-up were way more exciting than any other arcade I’ve seen.”
Juliet nodded lightly, picking her work back up again.
