The staff led Cynthia out of the escape room, where a man dressed in black athletic gear stood a short distance away, his face set in a stern expression.
When he saw her walk out safe and sound, his eyes darkened, but he quickly masked it.
Cynthia offered him an apologetic smile. After all, it was her fault she'd lost track of him, which had probably ruined his experience.
Dominic glanced at her, noting the guilty grin she wore, and tapped her lightly on the forehead.
“Seriously? How do you even manage to lose me in a place like this? That takes real talent.”
Cynthia pressed her lips together, speaking in a small voice. “Can we try one more time? I promise I’ll stick right by your side this time—no distractions, I swear.”
She was genuinely fascinated by this escape room; the clever design and use of space were absolutely captivating.
Dominic didn’t reply. He simply regarded her from above, his gaze cool and unreadable.
Cynthia looked up at him with pleading eyes. “Please, Nick? I really want to give it another go. I’m hooked on this game.”
Her big, doe-like eyes glistened as she stared at him, wordlessly begging.
A trace of amusement flickered in Dominic’s eyes. Eventually, he gave in with a nod.
This time, Cynthia followed Dominic everywhere, barely letting more than a step separate them. Still, every now and then, something in the room’s design would catch her attention. Whenever she started to wander off, Dominic would reach over, grab her hand, and pull her back, determined not to lose her again.
Cynthia glanced at their intertwined hands, then looked up at him. “I just wanted to see if I’d accidentally trigger another secret room or unlock a new puzzle. You never know—maybe I’ll stumble onto a hidden quest.”
Dominic listened, a resigned look on his face. He let her explore, but never once let go of her hand.
Dominic shrugged. “People recognize me all the time. It’s nothing unusual.”
His cocky tone left Cynthia momentarily speechless. She had to admit, he wasn’t wrong. In a city like this—especially in The Capital—Dominic Holloway’s reputation preceded him. It was common for people to know him even if he had no idea who they were. Mr. Holloway really did have that kind of presence.
The young man, completely at ease, came right over to Cynthia and grinned. “Hey, did you happen to go through the room with the ‘phantom butterflies’? That one’s insane. The design is genius—kind of like that mirror illusion room from earlier, but with an extra dose of mystery and creepiness.”
Cynthia’s curiosity was instantly piqued. Was there another hidden room they’d missed?
Spotting the interest in her eyes, the young man realized they hadn’t encountered that puzzle yet. He quickly offered, “Hey, let me add you on social media. I can tell you all about it.”
Cynthia was just about to politely decline when, suddenly, Dominic tugged her wrist—and not gently. In a swift, possessive move, he pulled her right to his side.
Feeling the tension radiating from him, Cynthia wasted no time in making it clear to the young man that she and Dominic were together, putting a quick end to any misunderstanding.
